Are all actions mandatory? Can I skip parts of an action?
No actions are mandatory. The rulebook states:
"These actions are not mandatory and if a player does not wish to or cannot perform an action during their turn, they simply skip it."
When a clock action has two listed sub-actions (e.g. one free and one costing a coin), they are separate — you may take one without the other.
Can I use additional (free) actions at any point during my turn, including in the middle of another action? Official
Yes.
Additional/free actions may be performed at any time during your turn, including in the middle of another action. This is intentional and enables combos. Example: during a build action, if you lack a worker to place, you can use a free action mid-build to place an apostle and retrieve workers, then complete the build.
Example confirmed by the publisher: you can take a mastery track advancement, gain a scroll as a bonus, immediately use that scroll's free action to gain a coin, then use that coin to pay for another part of the same mastery action — all in the same turn, in whatever order you choose.
Can I use a scroll I just acquired on the same turn I acquired it?
Yes. Free actions (including scrolls) can be used at any time during your turn, including in the same turn you obtained them.
Can I place an apostle or assistant on my board in the same turn I acquired it from the warehouse?
Yes, as long as you can pay the placement cost. The apostle or assistant must pass through the warehouse first, but you can place it on the same turn. However, your warehouse must have space to receive it before you can place it. If your warehouse is full (2 apostles), you must first place one of the existing ones before picking up a new one.
Do the astronomical dial and the clock face move together?
No. The two rings are completely independent. The astronomical dial (outer ring, with the hand) must move clockwise at least one space each turn. The clock face (inner ring) may optionally also move. You choose how far each moves separately.
Can I land on the same outer ring action as the previous player?
No. The astronomical dial must move at least one space each turn, so you can never land on the exact same outer ring space as the previous player. Even if you use deviations to move the clock face, you still cannot replicate the previous player's exact combination because the outer ring has moved.
(Theoretically, if you advanced far enough on the blue Innovation track and used enough deviations to travel halfway around the clock to the matching section on the other half, you could get the same action category — but not the same spot.)
Where does the astronomical dial start at the beginning of the game?
The astronomical dial is set to point at the actual current hour when the game begins. If you start at 8:25 PM, place the hand between 8 and 9.
Does the construction action cover both the month and zodiac sides of the calendar? Official
Yes. The construction action is valid for both sides of the calendar — both the time/month dials and the zodiac dials.
What actions can deviation tokens be used for?
Deviation tokens can be used to force extra movement of the clock (astronomical dial), the apostle gear, and constructions. They cannot be used to increase the painter's movement.
Can a player deliberately spin the apostle gear multiple times using deviations to advance the rooster several spaces in one turn? Official
Yes.
The rooster advances every time a red tooth of the left gear aligns with the red arrow, regardless of how that alignment is triggered. There is no cap on how many times the rooster can advance in a single turn. A player can take multiple deviations to spin the apostle gear repeatedly, advancing the rooster multiple times.
This is considered valid strategic play. The publisher confirmed: "You can move it multiple times in one round, correct." As the game ending completes the full round (all players play the same number of turns), this is a legitimate tactic — particularly relevant for the last player in turn order who can see all public VP information.
Can deviations be used to increase the painter's movement steps?
No. Deviations only apply to the clock mechanism itself (dial rotation), the apostle gear, and constructions. The painter's movement is governed solely by your Observation (yellow) track level.
Is it mandatory to move the hammer token when performing a build action?
No. Moving the hammer is optional. You select the dial you want to build, move the hammer to an adjacent space if you wish, pay resources, and place the dial and a worker. You can build without moving the hammer at all.
Can you move the hammer without actually constructing anything?
No. Moving the hammer is a step within the construction action — you cannot move it without actually completing a build. If you are not building anything, you do not move the hammer.
Do you need an available worker to perform a construction action?
Yes, for normal calendar/zodiac dials. You must have a worker available to place on the constructed dial. The rulebook states: "to build, you must have an available worker to place on the constructed dial."
Exception: the Final Construction dial (the 8-VP end-game action) does not require a worker — see Section 5.
Are hammer bonuses from the hammer card cumulative at higher levels?
No. You use one bonus — normally the highest one available at your current level. If you prefer a lower-level bonus in a specific situation, you may choose it instead, but bonuses do not stack.
When is the Final Construction dial flipped? When "a" dial is completed or when the entire calendar is complete?
The Final Construction dial is flipped when the last calendar dial is constructed — i.e. when the entire calendar (all month and zodiac dials) is completed. It is not flipped when any individual dial is completed.
Who can use the Final Construction action? Official
Any player who has not yet taken their turn in the current round when the end is triggered.
Remaining players take their normal turns. If they choose a construction action, the Final Construction dial is available as an option. The player who triggered the end of the game can also use it if they have an additional build action (e.g. from a saved red scroll).
Can a player use the Final Construction action multiple times?
Yes. Since no worker is placed on the Final Construction dial, multiple players (and even the same player with multiple build actions) can use it. Each use costs 1 gold + 1 wood + 1 paint + 1 iron and awards 8 VP.
Does the Final Construction still require you to have a spare worker available?
No. The tile explicitly states no worker can be placed on it. Since there is no worker placement requirement, you do not need to have a spare worker available to use this action. You only need the resources to pay for it.
Does the Final Construction give adjacency points or calendar section bonuses?
No. You receive no adjacency VP and no calendar section bonuses. You do still receive your hammer bonus.
When passing, do you retrieve exactly the number of workers shown on the pink track, or up to that number? Official
Up to that number. You are not required to retrieve the maximum number indicated by the Precision (pink) track. You may choose to retrieve fewer workers if you wish.
Does the moon bonus (+1, +2) on the pink Precision track apply to all moon activations, or only when passing?
Only when passing. The pink Precision track shows how many steps you take when you activate the moon as part of passing. It does not apply to other moon activations (e.g. from scrolls or the painter action).
The Observation (yellow) track governs the moon's steps when activated outside of passing. The rulebook (section 5.5) is specific:
"Precision Track (pink): Indicates the steps to take when a player passes their turn." "Observation Track (yellow): Indicates the maximum number of steps the painter can move on the calendar and the number of steps when activating the moon."
When passing, do you still move the clock hand?
No. When you pass, you do not move the clock hand. The rooster advances one step when you pass, but the dial hand does not move.
Can you recover the worker you just placed on the action space (e.g. by placing an apostle)? Official
Yes. Free actions can be used at any time, so placing an apostle (which retrieves workers) can immediately recover the worker you just placed this turn.
How many workers do players start with?
- 2-player game: 5 workers available from the start
- 3-player and 4-player games: 4 workers available from the start
Additional workers can be unlocked during the game.
Should workers be retrieved from Calendar and Zodiac dials?
Be careful. Workers placed on calendar dials remain there for the rest of the game — they score points for placed dials and contribute to objective conditions. If you retrieve them (e.g. when passing), you lose those scoring opportunities and any objective progress tied to having workers on those dials.
What does each mastery track do?
| Track | Colour | Primary Function | |-------|--------|-----------------| | Innovation | Blue | Controls how far you can rotate the dials each turn | | Precision | Pink | Determines steps when passing; unlocks sculptor levels | | Observation | Yellow | Determines painter steps and moon activation steps |
When advancing a mastery track that shows "advance 1 track + pay 1 coin to advance another", can you advance the same track twice?
Yes. The "book with question mark" symbol means any track of your choice — including the same one you just advanced.
Does paying the coin for the optional second track advancement become mandatory if you have a coin?
No. The two sub-actions are separate optional actions. You can take the free advancement and skip the paid one even if you have a coin available.
What does the sculptor's level correspond to?
The sculptor's level is determined by your position on the Precision (pink) track. The rulebook says: "Perform the action corresponding to your sculptor's level." The Level 2 sculptor gives you a coin in addition to moving the painter or moon. You must use the action at your current sculptor level (you cannot voluntarily use a lower level).
Can 1 coin be used as any basic resource?
Yes. One coin counts as any single basic resource (wood, paint, iron). One gold also counts as any basic resource.
What conversions are valid for acquiring gold?
Gold requires 3 identical units. Valid combinations:
| Combination | Result | |-------------|--------| | 3 identical resources | 1 gold | | 2 identical resources + 1 coin | 1 gold | | 1 resource + 2 coins | 1 gold | | 3 coins | 1 gold |
Note: Gold cannot be converted back into coins. The conversion is one-way. You cannot pay gold where a coin is required, and vice versa (1 gold ≠ 1 coin).
(Developer confirmed: the additional actions reference card omits gold by mistake — both coin and gold can be used as basic resources, as shown on the main board.)
The additional actions card only mentions coin (not gold) as a substitute for resources. Is this a misprint? Official
Yes, this appears to be an omission. Both coin and gold can be used as any basic resource. The main board reference is correct. The additional actions card simply forgot to mention gold.
Do you have to pay to place an apostle on your player board?
Yes. Forgetting to pay for apostles is one of the most common mistakes. You must pay the cost each time you place an apostle on your board from the warehouse.
What happens if you are entitled to take an apostle but already have all 12? Official
There is no compensation. The action simply cannot be performed (or becomes void for that part). The publisher confirmed: "There is no compensation if you pick all apostles."
Can you take 3 apostles in a single turn?
Yes, if you have enough actions (e.g. a main apostle action plus additional actions from red scrolls). Community members have confirmed doing this.
What is the difference between red (sealed) scrolls and blue (royal) scrolls?
- Red sealed scrolls: Grant one-time action bonuses (e.g. extra build, painter movement, worker retrieval). Used immediately or saved and used as free actions at any time.
- Blue royal scrolls: Score VP at end of game based on a condition (e.g. 3 VP per X, up to a max of 10).
For blue royal scrolls that score 3 VP up to a max of 10 — does that mean 3 instances = 9 and 4 instances = 10?
Yes. The scoring is 3 VP per qualifying instance, capped at 10 VP total. So 3 instances = 9, and 4+ instances = 10.
Can the clock face action with two mastery book options (one free, one paid) be partially completed?
Yes. The two options are independent. You can take the free advancement and skip the paid one if you choose or cannot pay.
The assistant reads "1 VP for each upgrade in your production tracks OR hammer track." Does this mean only one of them, or both?
Both. Despite the word "or," the intent (confirmed by community interpretation and the matching iconography on the scoring tile) is: count all upgrades across both your production tracks and your hammer track, then award 1 VP per upgrade. The "or" is intended as inclusive — "is this upgrade on the production track or the hammer track? If yes, count it."
Can you claim multiple common objectives on the same turn as free actions?
Yes. There is no stated limit on free actions. If you have fulfilled multiple common objectives and have available workers, you may claim any number in the same turn.
Can you claim more than one objective on the same turn?
Yes. Free actions have no stated per-turn limit. You may claim all objectives you qualify for in a single turn.
What does "calendar dials" mean in the game-end trigger? Both months and zodiac?
Yes. Calendar dials means both month dials and zodiac dials — the entire calendar section below the astronomical clock. The game triggers when all of these are constructed.
When the game end is triggered, do all players get to finish the round?
Yes. The game ends after completing the full round in which the trigger occurs (either the last calendar dial is built or the fourth rooster's call). All players play the same number of turns. If Player B triggers the end in a 3-player game, Player C still takes their turn before end-game scoring begins.
What triggers the rooster's call?
The rooster advances every time a red tooth of the left apostle gear aligns with the red arrow on the board. This happens automatically as gears rotate (from apostle actions or dial movement) and when a player passes. When the rooster reaches the end of its track, it "crows" after the current player finishes their turn, ending the round.
What is scored at the end of the game?
- Position on the three mastery stained-glass windows (Innovation, Precision, Observation)
- Leftover gold (converted to VP)
- Assistants placed on workshop cards
- Shared stained-glass objectives
- Apostles on your apostle panel
- Blue royal scroll conditions
- Minus: Broken gears from unresolved deviations at game end
What happens if a player cannot correct all deviations when the rooster crows?
They lose VP for each uncorrected deviation. Deviations that remain unresolved at game end also reduce the final score (broken gears penalty).
Are Victory Points fully public information?
Yes. VP is tracked on a shared scoring track and all components are visible. This is relevant when deciding whether to accelerate the rooster to end the game — a player with full information and last-turn position can calculate whether it is advantageous to trigger the end immediately.
Are the apostles set aside for the automa out of the game entirely?
No. The apostles shown on discarded automa action cards are not taken by the automa — they are effectively removed from the game, which benefits the human player (fewer apostles to compete for).
When the automa takes an apostle, does it use the apostle gear normally?
The automa takes the apostle shown on its card and the gear is rotated one step. You do not need to rotate the gear until it reaches that apostle.
Does the human player take apostles the same way as in multiplayer?
Yes. The human player takes apostles per the standard rules.
If the calendar is completed before round 12 in solo, does the game end immediately?
No. The game ends when the automa takes its last action in the current round, not at the moment the calendar is completed.
How does scoring work in solo mode?
The human player scores normally as in multiplayer. The automa scores based on its own four scoring categories (as shown on the automa cards), not on the standard scoring track. Compare totals to determine the winner.
In solo setup, do you start with production tracks at level 0 like multiplayer? Official
No. In solo mode, you must start the game with all three production tracks at level 1 (one level higher than the multiplayer starting position of level 0).
Does the automa claim common objectives at the end of certain rounds? Does it discard the bonus tile?
Yes. When the automa claims a common objective (at the end of rounds 3, 6, 9), the bonus tile is discarded — it is no longer available to the human player if they had not already claimed it.
How do you tell the difference between IX and XI calendar tiles?
The tiles have a pinkish marker at the top-right when oriented correctly. To orient: hold the tile with the image the correct way up and flip it on the y-axis to see the roman numeral. You can also check against tiles with unambiguous orientation (like V) to confirm the flipping direction. Note: incorrect placement during setup has no effect on gameplay.
Why does the general rooster track show #6 when the maximum is 5?
The #6 space is used in solo mode. In multiplayer, the rooster track only goes to 5 (four rooster calls end the game).
Is the moon always placed one space left of the astronomical dial hand at setup?
Yes, per the standard setup rules. The moon's starting position is determined by the hand position (current time). Some community members have proposed placing it directly opposite as a house rule for more accurate astronomical representation, but this is not an official variant.
Is the game accessible for red/green colour-blind players?
Mostly yes, with minor workarounds needed. One community member with red/green colour blindness noted:
- The three apostle colour groups (green, orange, and dark/purple) are distinguishable by number — all apostles are numbered, so once groups are initially sorted by a sighted player, they can be referenced by number thereafter.
- The orange apostles have a faint texture that is very hard to see for colour-blind players.
- Player board spaces for apostle colours need to be pointed out initially.
- Stained-glass objectives referring to specific apostle colours need verbal clarification.
- Two of the darker player colours can be hard to distinguish in low light.
Suggestion: choose lighter player colours and use apostle numbers for reference.
